NY/NJ Law Certificate

About the Class

We spend a great deal of time focused on Federal labor laws and regulations. However, there are significant differences between the states that make up the New York Metropolitan area. In fact, there are many instances where either New York or New Jersey laws are more. This program will examine the differences and the overlapping areas between Federal law and both New York and New Jersey laws.

Program Topics

  • Understand when federal law preempts state law and when state modifications to federal law are appropriate.
  • Understand when state law preempts federal law and how to comply.
  • Discuss how both states are aggressively advocating a pro-employee agenda, well ahead of the federal government.
  • Review state regulations: paid leave, ban the box, minimum threshold standards, independent contractor.


This course is approved for valuable recertification credits by both HRCI and SHRM.
